Our Journey Through Zanzibar

Our exploration took us from the bustling markets of Stone Town, where the scent of spices fills the air, to the tranquil shores of Nungwi and Kendwa, where the sunsets are nothing short of magical. We wandered through ancient alleyways, marveled at the intricate architecture, and indulged in the island’s famed cuisine—think fresh seafood and Zanzibar pizza.

One of the highlights? Celebrating New Year’s Eve not once, but twice, as we crossed time zones and embraced the island’s vibrant nightlife. Zanzibar is a place where every moment feels like a celebration.

Zanzibar isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, exploring the island’s rich history, or diving into its crystal-clear waters, this island paradise offers something for everyone.

Zanzibar: A New Adventure Begins

Landing on Zanzibar, we chose to stay at the Bella Vista Resort in the southwest town of Kisinkasi. This serene location offers lush gardens, a swimming pool, and spectacular ocean views where local fishermen go about their work.

The resort is located near Dimbani Beach, a perfect spot to witness Zanzibar’s stunning beauty. Despite being tucked away from the bustling tourist hubs, the area is alive with local culture, making it an ideal introduction to the island. Zanzibar spans just 2,700 square kilometers, yet it’s Africa’s most famous island, rich in history from Portuguese, Arab, and British colonization to its brief independence and eventual union with Tanzania. Today, it’s home to about 1 million people, 99% of whom are Muslim.

Touring the East Coast: Jambiani and Paje

Eager to explore, we rented a car and embarked on a journey along the southeastern coast. Our first destination was Jambiani, a quaint village where children play on the beach, and kite surfers take advantage of the constant wind. This area is dotted with boutique hotels and offers a blend of natural beauty and local charm.

Next, we visited Paje, a vibrant town with the clearest blue waters and softest white sands. This spot is a kite-surfing haven, thanks to its shallow waters and consistent winds. Traditional dhow boats, handmade by local fishermen, added to the picturesque scene. Sitting in the shallow waters of Paje felt like being in paradise, and the beauty of this town left us in awe.

Hidden Gems in the South: Matende Beach

Driving further south, we discovered some of Zanzibar’s most extraordinary beaches. One standout was Matende Beach, a secluded gem surrounded by baobab trees and towering rocks. This remote location on the island’s southern tip was a highlight of our trip, offering pristine sands, clear waters, and a tranquil atmosphere.

Thanks to our rental car, we arrived early and avoided the crowds, making the experience even more special. The peacefulness of this beach, combined with its dramatic landscape, made it the perfect spot for photography and relaxation.

The Northern Coast: Nungwi and Kendwa Beaches

Our exploration of Zanzibar continued with a visit to the island’s northern tip. Nungwi Beach, located here, is renowned for its crescent-shaped shoreline, wide sandy stretches, and crystal-clear waters. Parking proved challenging, but we secured a spot at the Hilton hotel in exchange for enjoying their facilities. This beach, with its luxurious vibe and breathtaking views, quickly became one of our favorites.

Just a short drive south, we reached Kendwa Beach, another northern gem. Here, we parked right on the sand and soaked in the stunning surroundings. The local Masai people, dressed in traditional red loincloths, added a cultural element to this idyllic setting. Kendwa’s beauty, combined with its vibrant local life, made it feel like stepping into a postcard.

Stone Town: A Window into Zanzibar’s History

No trip to Zanzibar is complete without exploring Stone Town, the island’s historic capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area offers a mix of fascinating and somber history, having been a hub for the spice and slave trades.

While walking through its streets, we visited the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen. His childhood home is a must-see for fans and stands as a testament to the island’s diverse cultural heritage. Stone Town’s historic significance and vibrant atmosphere make it a captivating destination for travelers.

Unique Experiences in Zanzibar

Throughout our journey, we indulged in local delights like Stony Tangawisi, a ginger beer that quickly became a favorite. Zanzibar’s charm lies in its ability to offer both luxury and authenticity, with upscale resorts and traditional villages existing side by side.

Driving across the island, we also passed through Jozani Forest, home to unique monkeys found only in Zanzibar. This wildlife encounter added another layer of excitement to our adventure.
